People chant kirtan for a variety of reasons, including:
- Inner peace: Kirtan is a devotional practice that can help people achieve inner peace, calm, and connection.
- Socializing: Kirtan can be a way to socialize and get to know one’s inner self.
- Meditation: Kirtan can help people achieve meditative states.
- Expressing oneself: Kirtan can be a way to express oneself.
- Cultivating love: Kirtan can help people cultivate love for a deity and for others.
- Connecting with God: Kirtan originated in India as a way for yogis to commune with God by chanting the names of Hindu gods and goddesses.
- Removing negative energies: The mantras chanted in kirtan are said to resonate with chakras and remove negative energies.
- Transporting the mind: The word “mantra” is made up of two halves, “man” and “tra”, which refer to the chant’s ability to transport the mind from one state to another.
- Bringing people together: When people chant in a group, the music’s ability to bring people together can transport the energy of the room to another level
